What this checks
Trademarks & artist references
Brand names, franchise or character names, celebrities, and "in the style of [artist]" phrasing are the most common removal triggers on Etsy — and the most severe, since repeated IP flags can suspend a shop.
AI disclosure
Under Etsy's June 2025 Creativity Standards, AI-assisted designs are allowed but must be disclosed. The checker verifies your description carries a disclosure when you say AI was used, and flags listings that contradict it.
Craft claims
"Handmade", "hand-drawn", and "hand-painted" claims on designs that weren't made that way violate Etsy's creator transparency rules — a frequent cause of takedowns for AI-assisted and print-on-demand shops.
Fabricated specifics
Invented materials, dimensions, production times, or file formats are grounds for buyer disputes and "item not as described" cases, which feed Etsy's moderation signals.
Keyword stuffing
Titles that read as comma-separated keyword chains are penalized by Etsy search and flagged under its listing quality guidance. Natural phrasing now ranks better.
Formatting rules
Title length (140 characters), exactly 13 tags, 20 characters per tag, lowercase tags, no symbols — mechanical rules Etsy enforces at publish time, checked deterministically (not by AI).
Etsy's AI disclosure rules, explained
In June 2025 Etsy rolled out its Creativity Standards, which reframed what sellers must disclose about how their items are made. AI-assisted designs are explicitly allowed — but the listing has to be honest about it. In practice that means three things:
- Disclose AI use in the description. A clear sentence stating the design was created with AI assistance, directed and edited by you. Burying it or omitting it is what gets listings reported.
- Set the production fields truthfully. For AI-assisted designs: who made it = "I did", when made = "Made to order", and creator attribution set to "Designed by" you — not claims of hand-crafting.
- Never claim "handmade" for AI work. Craft claims like hand-drawn or hand-painted on AI-assisted designs are treated as misrepresentation under the same standards.
Trademark and IP rules sit on top of all of this and predate the Creativity Standards: brand names, fictional characters, franchises, celebrity names, and "in the style of" a living artist are removal triggers anywhere they appear — title, tags, or description — even when your own product photo or input mentioned them.
Questions, answered
Does Etsy allow AI-generated art?
Yes. Since the June 2025 Creativity Standards, Etsy explicitly allows AI-assisted designs as long as the seller discloses the AI use and sets the listing's creator attribution correctly. Sellers get in trouble for hiding AI use, not for disclosing it.
Do I have to disclose AI use in my Etsy listing?
If your design was made with AI assistance, yes — Etsy expects the listing to say so. A short disclosure line in the description plus the right "who made it" setting covers it. Listings reported for undisclosed AI use are a common removal category.
What gets Etsy listings removed most often?
Trademark and IP violations lead by a wide margin: brand names, characters, celebrity names, and artist-style references in titles, tags, or descriptions. Undisclosed AI use, false "handmade" claims, and keyword-stuffed titles follow.
Is this checker official or affiliated with Etsy?
No. ListWren is not affiliated with Etsy, Inc. This check is based on Etsy's published policies, which we last reviewed on 2026-06-12 — it catches the issues we know about, but Etsy's enforcement decisions are final and this is not legal advice.
How is the risk level calculated?
Two passes: a deterministic check of Etsy's mechanical rules (title length, tag count and format, disclosure presence) and an AI audit of semantic risks (trademarks, claims, stuffing). You see a pass/warn result per category with a specific fix for every warning.
